Concrete Permeability Apparatus

The water permeability test on Concrete determines the resistance of concrete against water under hydrostatic pressure. This permeability test should be considered the dominant test to evaluate the case whereby concrete is subjected to hydrostatic pressure. Durability testing is important to determine the lifespan of your structure. Permeability is the property of rocks that is an indication of the ability of fluids (gas or liquid) to flow through rocks. 

High permeability will allow fluids to move rapidly through rocks. A rock with 25% porosity and permeability of 1 MD will not yield a significant flow of water. Today, high demands are placed on concrete. It is therefore of crucial importance to determine the water penetration depth of the material for the respective application.  A special waterproof cement and admixture are used to waterproof concrete. By measuring the permeability of standard mortar, it is possible to determine how water resistant these compounds are. In order to determine the permeability of cement mortar specimens with or without its water proofing compound, permeability apparatus are used.

Mortar Permeability Apparatus consists of Stainless Steel Cells mounted on a stand and a pressure chamber. The cell is filled with 100mm Dia x 50mm High Specimen. The instrument consists of 6 Nos. of Stainless Steel permeability cell – which consists of a bottom plate, specimen cell, water cell or collar, top plate and four tension rod with nuts to clamp down mould and collar between bottom plate and top plate. The bottom plate has an outlet for percolating water and is recessed to hold the mould in place with a washer in between. The top plate has an inlet for water, a connector for the application of pressure to the water in the cell. The pressure chamber provided is a Stainless steel cylinder. This is provided at the top with a water inlet, a Schrader valve for application of pressure, and a pressure regulator valve fitted with two pressure gauges. The two pressure gauges have a range of 0- 7 bar, one connected to the pressure chamber and the other to measure the permeability cell pressure. A valve is provided on the bottom of the pressure chamber for drainage and release of pressure. A pressure hose is provided to connect the pressure chamber to the cell assembly. A stand is provided to sit the permeability cell assembly. Air compressor is  provided with the instrument as per Demand. An air compressor is essential to conduct the test which can develop a pressure of 10 bar.
